A Glass Cage

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in a cage?  Where everyone can look at you, point fingers at you, criticize you, and you can't do anything about it but accept every hurting words, humiliation and blame.  Because what else can you do?  Every where you turn in your glass cage, there's nowhere to go, no one to turn to, you're all alone, you got no escape but you're own reflection, the only comfort, the only one who is reaching out to you.  All you can do is crawl in a corner and embrace yourself, put your arms around yourself and be the comfort you've been badly needing.  Freedom seems faraway, escape is out of the question, nothing to break the glass with, the glass too thick and unbreakable.  You push, you bang the walls but nothing moved.  You are trapped like a figurine, treated like a glass menagerie, the most special one of all the rest...a unicorn.  Now you are the favorite in the lot, for your uniqueness and the myth that makes you so special.  But how long will it last.  When can your owner get tired of you and take you out of your gilded glass cage, taken down from the pedestal, place with the unwanted ones, the old ones, the discarded ones....here there are no gilded glass, no light, no pedestal but a bare, old, wooden display case, dusty and worn out.  You belong to the outcast now, disparage from your glorious glass castle.  But this is free, on your own and that is the best refuge anyone can ask for.
